housing affordability

The Positive Outcome We Want To Achieve:
A complex and multi-layered problem should not deter us from securing the ability to provide real, well-thought out and achievable solutions to our affordable housing challenges here in the Charlotte Region. By committing to moving conversations forward, and working to encourage lateral discussions, REBIC’s goal is to be a major player in bringing together the voices, talent, and resources needed to move theory into action.

What We’re Doing Now.
Our focus is to create movement by focusing on these 6 strategies.

  1. Expand Homestead Exemption – Raise the threshold for income qualification, and lower age threshold
  2. Retrofit Existing Commercial Buildings – Increase flexibility for codes and local regulations
  3. State Tax Credit – Use the Federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) as the model
  4. Amend Housing Authorities Law – Move the 20% set aside for 60% AMI to 10% and 80% respectively
  5. Expand Use of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) – Utilize the Charlotte UDO
  6. Address Role of Local Regulatory Burden – Expand the definition of affordable housing, enhance the review for affordable housing projects and administrative flexibility

Through well-planned and cross sector representation we are working to form a robust Housing Affordability Coalition to address the above strategies.
