1.  Charlotte Urban Forestry’s Proposed Tree Manual Revisions Released

Charlotte’s Urban Forestry Department has just published proposed changes to the Charlotte Tree Manual.  Some of these updates, which provide additional flexibility for builders and developers are targeted for review and will likely make their way into the regulatory framework already established under the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO).  As these updates were just introduced yesterday, we are still in the process of completing our analysis.  Stay tuned for updates!

My take:  Trees and storm water related matters have been among the most difficult to navigate since the UDO became effective.  Tim Porter, Charlotte’s Chief Urban Forester, presented this to the HBAGC’s Custom Construction Council last Thursday and mentioned the Tree Manual Amendments would be forthcoming.  We will be anxiously watching to see if the common-sense approach that has been communicated, comes to fruition.  Similarly, Robbey Zink and Andrew Poindexter with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services recently provided this presentation to the HBAGC’s Land Development Council where they attempted to provide some clarification on the new regulations.  Both indicated a willingness to continue discussions.  Additional flexibility is essential as administrators review projects already in the pipeline while future text amendments undergo drafting and development.

 2.  New Member Spotlight – David McGuire, COO Roby Family of Companies

We’re proud to feature David McGuire as our current “Member Spotlight”.  He is a Charlotte native and the Chief Operating Officer for the Roby Family of Companies.  This includes Andrew Roby, Roby Commercial, Roby Services and Roby Realty, which serves clients across the Carolinas through offices in Charlotte, Boone, and Asheville, NC.  He is also an Executive Committee member of REBIC.

From a personal standpoint, he volunteers as a baseball coach for South Park Youth Association and is an active member of Christ Episcopal Church.  In 2013, David was named one of the Charlotte Business Journal’s “Top 40 Under 40” young professionals.”  Get to know David!

My take:  David joined the REBIC Executive Committee late last year filling the unexpired term of a member of the Home Builders Association of Greater Charlotte (HBAGC).  He brings a broad, well-rounded perspective to our leadership team and represents the next generation of industry all-stars.  We are thrilled he was willing to serve again in this role.
