#1 Jason Moore, with Rodgers Builders, Appointed Chair of the BDC (Building Development Commission)

One of the critical responsibilities of being an experienced member of the development community is the call to serve on one of the dozens of pivotal advisory boards in the counties in and surrounding our region. In fact, to facilitate that call, REBIC has a section of its website dedicated to that end. (Scroll to the county in which you want to see service opportunities.)

Today, we’re introducing you to a specific board, the BDC, or Building Development Commission for Mecklenburg County. And we’re proud to announce that one of our own former REBIC Board members, NAIOP member, and influential business leader Jason Moore has been appointed to chair this important board. His term runs for three years.

The role of the Building Development Commission (BDC) is to review, advise and make recommendations to the Board and the Department regarding land development/building industry matters, the annual budget of County departments with land development/building regulatory functions, the methodology for establishing and the level of all fees charged, land development/building regulatory programs, processes, plans, and procedures for efficiency and effectiveness, and more. Navigate here to read the entire scope of the BDC, see the calendar of meetings, and most importantly find a link to serve on this board.

We are proud to feature Jason and the BDC in our 2 For Tuesday and encourage you to become aware of the BDC and how its actions shape your daily business decisions.

My Take:  I can’t tell you how thrilled we are to have Jason serve as Chair of this important board. He’s a practical guy who takes a common-sense approach to most things. His leadership of this crucial body that serves as a conduit between the County and the industry is a really positive development. Thanks, Jason, for taking this on!

#2 REBIC Members Dominate DSTAC Leadership Team

Another powerhouse of oversight and influence is the DSTAC (Development Services Technical Advisory Committee). This organization’s Co-Chair, appointed by the City’s DSTAC Leadership Team, is our own Karla Knotts. In fact, the membership roster reads as a who’s who in our industry including Mark Van Dine, our recent REBIC Member Spotlight.

The Development Services Technical Advisory Committee (DSTAC) serves an advisory role and provides input on technical and procedural regulatory issues regarding development in Charlotte. This committee serves as a forum for discussing policy and procedural changes or conflicts regarding plan approval, inspection services, and enforcement of land development requirements and provides recommendations, as needed. The committee is led by two co-chairs, and the committee includes representatives from City Departments, Partner Agencies and the Development Industry, including developers, designers, and development associations.

The committee meets monthly, an aggressive schedule, to work through the myriad of issues that must be interpreted and implemented in a manner that benefits our industry as it interprets policy and law. Download and review the charter to become more involved and understand the breadth of your voice of advocacy throughout the region.

My Take:  After taking several months to realign its purpose, the DSTAC is back up and running better than ever. In addition to Karla Knotts serving as Co-Chair and Mark Van Dine participating as the REBIC representative, current REBIC Chair, Michael Foess and Dan Melvin, a recent NAIOP President, also have roles on the committee. Thanks to you all for your continued service to the industry!
