#1 Candidate Filing Has Begun. What You Need to Do Next…

The candidate filing period for municipal elections is open and runs until noon on July 18th.  First and foremost, please check your voter registration to ensure it is valid and up to date.  You can do that here no matter where you reside in North Carolina.

Below are links to relevant county Board of Elections websites to gain additional information about the upcoming elections:

Mecklenburg County Board of Elections

Iredell County Board of Elections

Cabarrus County Board of Elections

Gaston County Board of Elections

Union County Board of Elections

My Take:  To put this in context, most municipalities in the area hold non-partisan elections except for the City of Charlotte which holds a Primary Election on September 9th. The winner of many of the Charlotte Council seats will be determined during the primary contest with the notable exception of District 6 (was Bokhari, now Peacock who is not running for re-election). As such, there are less than two months’ time between the end of filing and Primary Election Day. So, if you live in the City of Charlotte, you really need to start paying attention to the list of candidates who have filed to run for office. As we do every cycle, REBIC will produce a voter guide with information about each candidate and their perspectives on real estate and economic development matters.  Keep a look out for that right around the time of early voting during the latter part of August.

For now, we suggest you read and share our political leadership guide. A handy tool to evaluate your candidates. It’s sharable so we can spread the word about how to spot the leaders we need.

#2 Important Webinars Dive Deep into Community Area Plans

Join us for a virtual webinar to discuss how your Community Area Plan may impact you and your community.

During these events, residents can join breakout rooms and participate in discussions about the Community Area Plan relevant to their neighborhood.

These webinars will cover the same content but are offered at different times to accommodate varying schedules. Each event is divided into two parts: the first hour will offer breakout rooms for the West and North Plans, while the second hour will offer breakout rooms for the East and South Plans. Not sure which Plan impacts your community?

My Take:  During the two-year process that was conducted to develop the community area plans, I’ve heard good feedback from a number of folks in the industry who have provided feedback and attended several of the sessions that are offered by Planning Staff.  Because I think staff has continued to make a strong effort to reach out to the community at large, I want to gently remind you that this will likely be your last chance to weigh in on these before final adoption by the full City Council. Please take the time to get engaged on this before it is too late. Sadly, most folks don’t really pay attention until something gets their attention. Let’s NOT be those folks.
