1.  New Podcast is LIve!

REBIC is extremely excited to launch our newest episode of Getting Real with Rob, featuring Tim Minton, Executive Vice President for the North Carolina Home Builders Association.  The conversation is both educational and entertaining as it showcases Tim’s intuitive grasp of the global issues surrounding home building and real estate advocacy.  In an easy to listen to style that makes what seems like complicated content easy to understand, he shares an absolute wealth of information about how to tackle the real issues we all face daily.  You will come away knowing he understands the intricacies of creating sensible growth solutions and navigating the political and social climate of activism, as well as galvanizing those who want to come together to make a positive impact in our industry.

An alumnus of both Elon University and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Tim has been serving the NC Home Builder Association for 8 years. With a depth of experience as a lobbyist for some of the largest home building entities in the country, we are also happy to showcase his personal passions about workforce development as he discusses the Be Pro Be Proud program.

My take:  Tim is truly one of the good ones.  He is a professional and knows what he’s doing.  We are fortunate to have him representing our interests on the state level.  Not only does he know things, he gets stuff done.  Just in this legislative session alone he and his team have accomplished many things of significance.  Listen to learn more.

2.  Early Voting Begins Thursday.  Here’s What to Know and Where to Go.

Early voting for the City of Charlotte Primary Election begins at 8:00 am Thursday, August 24th at the Hal Marshall Annex, 618 North College Street, Charlotte.  Additional sites will open Tuesday, September 5th at 8:00 am.  Voting will conclude on Primary Election Day which is Tuesday, September 12th.  This year voters will be asked to show photo identification when they check in to vote.  Voters who vote by mail will be asked to include a photocopy of an acceptable photo ID when returning their ballot by mail.  Click here to see the full list of early voting sites.

My take:  If you live in the City of Charlotte in Districts 2, 4, or 5, please take note.  In District 2, Malcolm Graham is a seasoned leader with experience at the state legislative level and has served his City Council District ably.  He deserves another term and is a well-respected, reasonable Member of Council.  In District 4, incumbent Renee Johnson is running for a third term against Wil Russell, who works for a local affordable housing development group and currently serves on the Planning Commission.  Johnson has been nothing but a divisive voice on Council with little to show for it.  Russell understands the needs of a growing city and has obtained the endorsements of Mayor Vi Lyles and previous District 4 Council Member Greg Phipps.  In District 5, first term Council Member Marjorie Molina is running to retain her seat.  She has brought a breath of fresh air to the Council and is thoughtful in her decision-making and has shown leadership, meaning she makes tough choices even when they are not the most politically expedient or beneficial which is more than I can say for some of the other longer serving current council members.  Graham, Russell, and Molina deserve your consideration.

Bonus:

Last week, after a successful effort by the NCHBA to persuade a supermajority of Members of the North Carolina General Assembly to vote to override the governor’s veto, HB-488 became law.  The new law does a number of things aimed at improving housing affordability including:

  • Delaying implementation of the new energy code
  • Establishing a new residential building code council (separate from commercial)
  • Clarifying residential aesthetic standards may not be applied by local governments to townhomes, triplexes, and unstacked quadruplexes
  • Limiting municipalities from requiring overly exorbitant bonds for privately maintained stormwater BMPs
