Realtors® Advocate for Housing Industry Priorities at General Assembly

On Wednesday, June 6th, more than 50 Charlotte-area Realtors® traveled to Raleigh to participate in the NC Realtors® (NCR) Legislative Day.

Realtors® attended a forum with legislators from Mecklenburg and surrounding counties, including Rep. Jay Adams (R-Catawba), Rep. Jason Saine (R-Lincoln), Rep. Scott Stone (R-Mecklenburg), Rep. Jeff Jackson (D-Mecklenburg), Rep. Chaz Beasley (D-Mecklenburg), Rep. John Bradford (R- Mecklenburg), Rep. Rodney Moore (D-Mecklenburg), Sen. Dan Bishop (R- Mecklenburg), Sen. Kelly Alexander (D-Mecklenburg), and Sen. Joyce Waddell (D-Mecklenburg).

Throughout the morning, Realtors® thanked legislators for continued support of the Housing Trust Fund, the Workforce Housing Loan Program, disaster relief funding and for making needed changes to the sales tax law to end the confusion around the taxation of property management services. Realtors® also advocated for three legislative priorities for the short session:

Senators Dan Bishop and Jeff Jackson speak to Realtors® in Raleigh

Improve the State’s InfrastructureImprove requirements for developers to ensure that roads can be brought up to NCDOT standards for acceptance into the state system for future maintenance and develop a statewide roads database which clearly lists a road’s designation and maintenance responsibility that is easily accessible by consumers.Support Property ManagersAmend the law to allow for private process servers to be the allowable form of service for summary ejectment proceedings, and exempt Property Management Contracts from the state tax on services.Affordable Healthcare for Small Businesses and Independent ContractorsNorth Carolina should amend the law to allow small business owners and independent contractors to get health insurance through an Association Health Plan.

After the forum, the group heard from two of the state’s major political minds – Chris Sinclair of Cornerstone Solution and Brad Crone of Campaign Connections. The discussion focused on the landscape of politics in North Carolina and the nation, and provided valuable insight to those in attendance.

Thank you to all Realtors® who joined us – having such a strong showing makes a difference when communicating our priorities to legislators!
