Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement Announces New Fee Schedule And Other Changes

July 1st marks the beginning of a new fiscal year for Mecklenburg County. That means that any pending changes in fees typically take effect today. However, this year, there are a few changes coming, but the effective dates are going to be a little different. Here’s a quick rundown:

July 1st is normally the date that Code Enforcement staff and customers begin using a new Fee Ordinance, a document which outlines the fees for the next 12 months. This year’s fee ordinance is expected to be approved by the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) on July 6, 2016. Therefore, the previous fee ordinance will remain in place until the BOCC approves the new fee ordinance for FY16-17. The new fee schedule will likely be effective July 7, 2016. You will be notified when the BOCC approves the new fee ordinance. This fiscal year, Code Enforcement has recommended and the BOCC provided preliminary approval for reducing fees by 5 percent, and changing the fees for demolition projects. Those revised fees will go into effect with the passage of the new fee ordinance. The one change that does go into effect today, July 1st, 2016 is the updated Building Valuation Data Table. We first told you about this in the spring — this is a calculation that is used to assess permit fees, based on the type of structure customers are building. This is calculated automatically in the online permitting application, but can be calculated manually.

These are the first of many changes to be implemented over the course of the next year. A few days ago, Code Enforcement launched a comprehensive reorganization of its inspection teams aimed at serving all customers in a more effective manner. There are more enhancements ahead.

More information will be provided on the effective date of the new fee ordinance when it becomes available.
