Company – Real Estate & Building Industry Coalition (REBIC). (Charlotte)

Company and/or committee member tenure – My tenure here in Charlotte has been a total of approximately nine years with REBIC serving the organization in two separate assignments. And I spent 3 years serving on the committee.

What elements of the advocacy committee’s efforts excite you the most? – A huge benefit of the committee is the ability to engage with those who represent a wide range of disciplines and industries but possess big picture priorities that align with our goals. REBIC’s primary focus is insisting on clarity in outcome, and those dialogs bring understanding to the forefront. Because we advocate for our members in a factual, and visionary capacity, we can then encourage policy that elevates our economic health and expands opportunity. Our work on the advocacy committee allows us to deliberate using that vision, helping us devise the strategy needed to create the best outcome.

What are your favorite things about living in or working in the Charlotte Region? – This is a long list, because even considering all the places I’ve lived, like New York, DC, Colorado and even California, I can’t imagine anywhere else I’d rather be. Charlotte is unique in its combination of amenities, great weather, wide range of recreational choices, and really friendly people. There’s so much opportunity, especially by having a world-class airport. One of my favorites is the Whitewater Center, and the BB&T Ballpark is also an incredible facility. It’s a fabulous mix of old-world southern charm and new world sophistication combined with an energy contributed by those coming from different cultures and perspectives. I think it really works.

How have you utilized your involvement with the committee to advance your organization’s priorities? – The Charlotte Regional Business Alliance has been an incredible partner to REBIC over the past several years by assisting in facilitating several of our key priorities. These include support for informing the refinement of the Charlotte 2040 Plan and the Unified Development Ordinance. They also help us elevate initiatives related to housing affordability/attainability and support our desire to elevate the implementation of adaptive reuse strategies.

What successes or contributions do you consider the most significant during your advocacy committee tenure? – We believe our role as an organization is one that can thoughtfully disrupt, when necessary, effectively educate and connect, and confidently lead on matters that will affect the evolution of our region. But we’re most proud of the people who make up REBIC’s membership. It is their voices, insight, experience, and vision that fuel our accomplishments making it an honor to advocate for the real estate and development industry in the Charlotte region. We have also created a larger footprint for the organization through solid branding, enhanced recruitment and the addition of easily accessible resources. It is truly a remarkable pedigree of power and purpose.
