My Take: Choosing a political party is a very personal choice. but understand the facts so your voice is correctly used when you vote.
On August 19th we will be publishing our much anticipated Voter Guide for the Primary Election so please be on the lookout. In the meantime, I would like to make a personal appeal to those who live within the City of Charlotte and review the following.
Under current North Carolina law, if you are registered as an unaffiliated voter, you may choose either party’s Primary Election in which to participate. Within Mecklenburg County, Democrats currently have a sizeable registration advantage over Republicans, more than two to one – 317,125 to 156,480. But unaffiliated voters eclipse both major parties with 326,818 registrations.
This raises an important question which is why do we still have partisan elections at the local level in Charlotte? I think we need to rethink this going forward and would argue the ongoing partisan election process is a significant contributing factor to the large activist presence on the current City Council. The populace is trending to the ranks of the unaffiliated. If you find yourself thinking that way as well, you have until August 15th to modify your registration and still vote in the Primary Election on September 9th.
To put this all in perspective, only 4.92% of voters who were eligible to vote in the Primary Election of 2023, actually took the time to do so. If we can improve on that, even a little bit, with folks who share our values and ongoing commitment to the community, we really can make a difference and elect the kind of leadership we need to address our ever growing challenges.

Why are we insisting you attend this important event? Because to be educated around the particular nuances of this bill, and its far reaching effects is the only way to correctly communicate to your local County Council Members as you encourage them to support this legislation. Even more important is the message you share with your entire landscape of friends, family, and work connections. Use your vast resources, your platform, and your time to keep the momentum going.
The event will give a broad based and comprehensive overview of the following:
What is in the Legislation. (PowerPoint and Handouts You Need.)
What You Should Do Next. (Contacting Your Meck Cty Council)
How to Engage in Advocacy. (Positioning, Conversation, Strategy.)
We are absolutely honored to have the following leaders as our panel for the event:
Ned Curran: CEO Emeritus of Northwood Office. Previously, he was President & CEO of The Bissell Companies.
David Longo: David Longo is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of CBI | Workplace Solutions and the Chairman of the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance.
Allen Dargins: 2025 Chair Canopy Realtor® Association Government Affairs Committee. And Owner/BIC Realty Resources of the Carolinas, LLC
My Take: I can’t state strongly enough how incredible it is that our REBIC Counsel Larry Shaheen has assembled this powerhouse panel to speak to our members about the Transportation Bill. There is no other event that will provide you with the facts you need to help move this initiative forward. With so much confusion in politics today, the fact that this bill has so much support from both sides of the aisle is incredible. Spreading insight is imperative. In this case our advocacy work can only be leveraged through the addition of YOUR words, actions, and engagement.
