  1. Housing and Jobs Summit Held in Charlotte
    The City of Charlotte held a two-day meeting yesterday and today entitled “Future of Charlotte:  Housing & Jobs Summit.”  Yesterday’s activities were highlighted by several presentations from subject matter experts including Dr. Yongqiang Chu, author of the annual State of Housing Report that includes data from the multi-county Charlotte Region.  Today included priority-setting interactions between Members of the Charlotte City Council.  Read on for details and important links.

    2.  Charlotte UDO University to Launch Friday the 13th
    Beginning on Friday, January 13th, Planning Staff will provide 11 virtual training sessions on the new Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) which becomes effective on June 1, 2023.  Details below.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services is hosting a Stormwater Ordinance Workshop on January 26th from 9:30 to 3:00 pm.  During the workshop, participants will gain a better understanding of local ordinances, compliance, and plan review.  Register HERE.

1) Housing and Jobs Summit Held in Charlotte

Day 1 of the event was held at the Bojangles Complex in East Charlotte and contained a series of presentations that were offered to describe the challenge of providing housing and creating jobs.  The results of a recently conducted survey were also released but the participation level was pretty limited.  To view the presentations and video, click the link below.

Day 2 took place at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center and included several facilitated exercises between Charlotte Council Members who were split into working groups.  The day culminated with a presentation of priorities by the various teams and included the following items:

  • Streamline and overhaul local regulations related to the development process to enhance housing affordability
  • Expand those who may benefit from the Homestead Act exemption (increase income allowed and lower age)
  • Increase Housing Bond to $100 million (currently at $50 million)
  • Acquire land and utilize the land trust model to develop a similar program
  • Mitigate landlord risk to encourage the acceptance of vouchers
  • Preserve and improve Naturally Occurring Affordable Housing (NOAH)
  • Expand down payment assistance opportunities
  • Re-entry housing program
  • Partner with Habitat on construction job program

2) Charlotte UDO University to Launch Friday the 13th

The UDO University will provide virtual training opportunities to assist in learning the details of the UDO (effective date, June 1, 2023).  The 11 sessions to be presented by Planning Staff will include:

  • An Overview of the Charlotte UDO
  • Zoning Districts in the UDO
  • Tree Protection Article of the UDO
  • Subdivision, Network and Access, and Other Infrastructure
  • Neighborhood Zoning Districts
  • An Overview of the UDO Administration
  • Stormwater Standards in the UDO
  • Parking, Landscaping and Screening, and Open Space
  • Required New Street/Improvements and Standards
  • Frequent Users Questions and Answers
  • Residential Permitting
