#1: Two Important Advisory Committees Are Seeking Members

The City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County are seeking members to fill vacancies on two important advisory committees.

ONE – The City’s Alternative Compliance Review Board (ACRB) was established as a quasi-judicial board on June 17, 2024, by City Council action. This board will become effective no sooner than October 1, 2024 (more likely to be confirmed in November). The ACRB is a mechanism of providing alternative compliance for certain design regulations based on the criteria found in Articles 35.5 and 37.1 of the Unified Development Ordinance. The ACRB will approve, approve with modifications, or deny requests for alternative compliance to select standards identified in the UDO for the applicable zoning districts. If interested, please contact one of the following:

[email protected][email protected], or [email protected]

Committee Member Details:

5 regular members (1 must live outside of Charlotte city limits, but within the Charlotte ETJ (extraterritorial jurisdiction)

  • 3 – (one by City Council, one by Mayor, one by Board of County Commissioners) – involved real estate development industry including architects, landscape architects, civil engineers, urban designers, contractors, and other real estate development industry experts
  • 2 – (two by City Council) – community representative

3 alternates:

  • 1 – (one by City Council) – community representative

Alternate members serve on the Board in the absence of any regular members and are appointed in the same manner and for the same term as regular members.

TWO –

Also, the Mecklenburg County Clerk’s Office is encouraging residents to apply to serve on the Storm Water Advisory Committee (SWAC). Members are charged with reviewing and recommending storm water management policies, policy changes, long-range plans, and their budgetary and rate impacts. In addition, members hear appeals and reach decisions on service charges, credits, and adjustments.

Specifically, SWAC is looking to fill its industry, manufacturing, or commercial vacancies. Applicants must be employed full-time in the management and/or operation of industrial, manufacturing, or commercial property.

To apply or learn more, please visit https://bocc.mecknc.gov/Advisory-Boards or contact the County Clerk’s Office at 980-314-2939 or [email protected]. Applicants must reside in Mecklenburg County to qualify for an appointment.

My take:  I dedicated a prime section of this week’s newsletter to this ask, because these committees are THAT important. If you want positive outcomes, you, our industry members, should step up. Only you know how projects work, and that insight is crucial to making the ACRB work. Similarly, the SWAC has grown in importance as we have grown as a community. Please consider applying yourself or tapping someone who may possess the appropriate experience. If so, please contact me so I can assist you and/or them through the nomination process ([email protected]).

#2:  Please, Weigh in on the Charlotte Area Planning Process While There’s Still Time.

YOU ARE INVITED TO SHARE YOUR INPUT! Charlotte Future 2040 Community Area Planning Workshops continue this fall, and information shared at the workshops is available online through the “Supporting the Vision” Webtool.

Navigate through 5 virtual stations to learn about planned projects and available programs that will support future development. Then share your input about other needed projects and programs in your community via the surveys at the end of each page. Station topics include:

The webtool will be active and receiving input through November 15, 2024. Input received through the “Supporting The Vision” webtool will be used to develop the Charlotte Future 2040 Community Area Plans.

You are also invited to review and comment on the second draft Revised Charlotte Future 2040 Policy Map through November 15, 2024. The Policy Map provides guidance for the type and intensity of development that is appropriate throughout the city and has been revised through the Community Area Planning process. View and comment on the Revised Policy Map HERE.

Please consider participating in person by attending Phase 3 Community Area Planning Workshops to share input about projects and programs that will support future development. Workshops are drop-in format with no formal presentation.

Register for an upcoming Workshop!

My take:  Planning Staff is about halfway through conducting these workshops that we advertised several weeks ago. Apparently about 100 residents have participated either in person or online for the first two areas referenced above. That’s not enough for the 15th largest city in the nation. However, there’s still time to attend the remaining events. I’d also really encourage you to take a look at the revised policy map (link above) and provide your input. The map will have a lot to do with guiding development decisions for the foreseeable future. From what I can tell, it still needs a lot of work if we are going to be forward thinking as a community.
