Mike Kissel

Mike Kissel, Director of Land Development for Mattamy Homes, is a seasoned land development professional with more than two decades of experience in residential construction. A graduate of Illinois State University, Mike began his career in the field with Centex Homes as an Assistant Field Manager. Early exposure to on-site construction operations provided a strong foundation that later shaped his transition from homebuilding into land development. Mike moved into land development during his time with Standard Pacific Homes. After surviving the “Building Depression” of 2008-2012, Mike led the Land Development department at Bonterra Builders.

Over the years, he has benefited from exceptional mentors who helped shape his leadership style and strategic approach. Today, as he approaches his 50th “trip around the sun”, Mike considers it a responsibility to give back to the industry that has given him so much—particularly through mentorship of emerging professionals entering construction and development. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Land Development Committee and Vice Chair of the newly formed Advocacy Committee within the HBAGC. In addition, he sits on the Charlotte Water Developer Liaison Committee, working collaboratively with public agencies to improve communication and processes that impact growth and infrastructure.

Looking ahead, Mike is focused on helping develop data-driven tools that better communicate the positive impact of new construction. He believes the development community has too often been viewed narrowly—as the group that removes trees, adds traffic, and strains schools—without recognition of the broader benefits it provides. From creating local jobs to funding infrastructure and supporting long-term economic growth, Mike is committed to helping reshape the narrative around responsible development.

On a personal note, Mike is the proud father of two children, Grace and Oliver. Both spent years accompanying him to community and rezoning meetings, experiences that might have discouraged some from entering the field. Instead, Grace is now pursuing her master’s degree in Geography at University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Oliver recently began his college journey at Appalachian State University, majoring in Construction Management. Watching them find their own paths in related fields has been one of his greatest personal rewards.
