You have 5 minutes, right? Spend it watching this video on the WSOC news page. Because if you want to correctly explain to your friends and neighbors what their 1 cent sales tax increase is paying for, here are the soundbites you need. This Mecklenburg Transportation Referendum that passed November 4 garnered huge bi-partisan support and will provide us with over $19 Billion in funding over the next 30 years to address ever increasing infrastructure needs. Listen to and watch Larry Shaheen, one of the key players in securing the “YES” in the ‘Yes for Meck’ campaign, make plain the reasons we are all celebrating this win.

Following a week of interviews with potential candidates, the Charlotte City Council last night voted to confirm several appointees to the Metropolitan Public Transportation Authority (MPTA):
The Cornelius Board of Commissioners also voted last night to approve its appointment who will be Bob Menzel. Huntersville is expected to make its appointment at a meeting later today. Mecklenburg County is currently conducting interviews and is expected to finalize its picks next week.
My Take: Please watch the video. Larry did a great job articulating in a few but important words exactly how we arrived at success with the transportation referendum, and the next steps. Tracking how the dollars are spent and weighing in with regular input and recommendations will be a big priority of ours over the next few years.

The Mecklenburg County Clerk’s Office is encouraging residents to apply to serve on the Storm Water Advisory Committee (SWAC). Committee members are charged with reviewing and recommending storm water management policies, policy changes, long-range plans, and their budgetary and rate impacts. In addition, participants hear appeals and reach decisions on service charges, credits, and adjustments. SWAC is looking to fill its financial, accounting, or legal profession vacancies.
To apply or learn more about each board vacancy, please visit BOCC.MeckNC.gov/Advisory-Boards or contact the County Clerk’s Office at 980-314-2939 or [email protected]. Applicants must reside in Mecklenburg County to qualify for an appointment.
My Take: This is one of those advisory committees that doesn’t get a lot of publicity, but its policy direction and decisions are a big deal for the industry.
